The Challenge

Life care planning sits at the intersection of healthcare, legal, and financial services — and clients arrive already overwhelmed. They're often in the middle of a health crisis, facing decisions about a family member's long-term care, navigating systems they don't understand. The brand Benchmark needed had to do something genuinely difficult: project authority and expertise while making people feel less afraid, not more.

Brands in this space default to the same visual vocabulary — navy blues, institutional serifs, stock photography of families holding hands. None of it actually serves the client's emotional state. Benchmark wanted to be different, and they needed a brand identity that could hold that intention.

Direction & Thinking

Every visual decision was made in service of one goal: reducing cognitive load for someone in a stressful situation. The color palette was chosen for warmth and legibility simultaneously — nothing clinical, nothing cold, nothing that demands effort to read. Typography was set at a weight and scale that communicates clearly without requiring concentration. Layout decisions prioritized breathing room over information density.

The "Independent" in the name was load-bearing for us creatively. Independence — of the planner, of the client's choices, of the outcome — became the emotional through-line. The visual language was built to feel like a steady hand rather than an institution. Approachable enough to invite conversation, authoritative enough to justify the trust being placed in the service.

Outcome

A complete brand identity — wordmark, color system, typography, brand guidelines, and digital design templates — delivered ready for launch. The full brand guidelines document covers every use case the team needed: digital, print, presentation, and collateral. Of all the projects in this portfolio, Benchmark is the clearest demonstration of what it means to design for a user's emotional state rather than just their information needs.
